A Look at the Past

A look at the past is always a good way to see how far we have come and what has changed.  As we learned in class on September 9th and 11th, sport has evolved in many different ways overtime.  The main question that we learned to ask was if looking at the past will help us to understand sport today.  First, the connection that was made between the article and what we learned in class was the idea that physical activities and games existed in all cultures.  Although the forms, meanings, purposes, and who plays them changes the sport is still universal.  In the article, there is the question of a new sport that can be added to the winter Olympic games.  This sport is called skijoring.  The creators are taking multiple different sports that have always been around since back in the 1920s and recreating.  This shows that the sport is still universal.  Second, we learned that in the past there was a growing emphasis on organization in society and sports.  This was seen as industrialization.  Seen in the article, they are growing and expanding the events in the Olympics.  Third, we learned that in the past, specifically, the 1800s, women’s participation in sports was limited.  This can connect to the article and where sport has ended up and developed over time.  Today, women’s participation is almost if not equal to men’s participation.  The new sport that is being introduced to the winter Olympics is offered for both men and women.
