Sport and Socialization

As we learned on September 16th in our American Sport in the
21st Century class, socialization is an active process of learning
the culture of a society. First from the article, research has shown that
sport has a positive and negative role in socialization not only between young
children and their peers but between children and adults as well. This is connected to what we learned in
class. We learned that you are
socialized by many factors including your family, friends, peers, school,
community, and the media. This shows
that positives and negatives in sport socialization come can in fact come from
elders and peers. Second, we learned
that you never stop learning. You are
constantly being socialized. In the
article it is talking about the team coming together and socializing about the
up and coming sport in America; women’s rugby.
Each woman on the team is learning about each player on their team along
with the rules and norms of the sport.
Third, we learned in class that socialization involves the formation of
ideas about who we are and what is important in our lives. This is obvious in the article because those
women came together and decided to make up a team based on all their common
interests.
